Earls Court Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Earls Court Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our employees, customers, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our work. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with carpet, upholstery, rug and hard floor cleaning services in homes, offices and commercial premises.
We recognise our responsibility to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and to adopt best practice within the cleaning industry. Health and safety is an integral part of our planning, service delivery and staff training.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The aims of this health and safety policy are to prevent injury, ill health and property damage arising from our activities and to promote a positive safety culture within the company. To achieve this, we will:
Identify and assess risks associated with our services and take proportionate measures to control them. Provide clear instruction, information, training and supervision to employees so they can work safely and competently. Ensure that equipment, machinery and vehicles used in the course of our work are safe, well maintained and suitable for their intended purpose. Use cleaning products and chemicals in a way that protects people, surfaces and the environment. Respond promptly to incidents, accidents and near misses, investigating their causes and putting in place corrective measures.
Management Responsibilities
Company management has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that health and safety standards are maintained and reviewed. Management will:
Set and review health and safety objectives and performance. Ensure that sufficient resources are available for training, equipment, protective clothing and risk control measures. Maintain up-to-date risk assessments and safe working procedures for all core cleaning services. Monitor compliance with this policy through regular checks, supervision and feedback from staff and customers. Review this policy periodically and update it to reflect changes in legislation, best practice, company operations or identified risks.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, contractors and agency staff working on behalf of Earls Court Carpet Cleaning share responsibility for maintaining health and safety standards. Every individual is required to:
Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Follow all safety instructions, training, risk assessments and method statements provided by the company. Use equipment, tools, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately. Handle, dilute, store and dispose of cleaning chemicals only as instructed and in line with product safety data. Report accidents, incidents, near misses and hazards to management without delay.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our cleaning services and update them regularly. Before work begins, our operatives evaluate the site and discuss any specific access issues, security arrangements or customer concerns.
Typical risk controls include safe use and movement of hoses, cables and machines to avoid trips and falls. Securing work areas where necessary to prevent unintended access by children, pets, staff or visitors. Adapting methods where there are vulnerable occupants, such as older people or those with respiratory conditions. Using appropriate manual handling techniques and tools for lifting or moving machinery and furniture. Ensuring adequate ventilation when using products that produce vapours or strong odours.
Chemical Safety and COSHH
Cleaning chemicals are selected and used with care to minimise risks to people and surfaces. We follow manufacturer guidance and control of substances regulations when assessing and using products. This includes keeping safety data sheets available to staff and providing training on correct dilution, application and emergency measures.
Chemicals are stored securely in clearly labelled containers, kept away from food preparation areas and out of the reach of children and unauthorised persons. We avoid unnecessary use of strong chemicals and seek to use low hazard or environmentally considerate products where suitable for the task.
Equipment, Machinery and Maintenance
All machinery, including carpet cleaning extractors, vacuum cleaners, agitation machines and portable equipment, is selected for safety and performance. We ensure that machinery is maintained, tested and cleaned according to manufacturer guidance and internal schedules.
Only trained personnel are permitted to operate specific machines. Leads, plugs, hoses and accessories are inspected regularly for damage, and any faulty equipment is removed from service until it is repaired or replaced. Vehicles used to transport workers and equipment are kept in a roadworthy condition and loaded safely.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means, suitable personal protective equipment is provided. This may include gloves, eye protection, masks or respirators, knee pads and protective footwear. Staff receive training on when and how to use protective equipment and are expected to wear and care for it correctly.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Respect for the safety of customers, building occupants and the public is a priority. When working in homes, offices or commercial premises, our teams consider fire safety, emergency exits and safe access routes. Work areas are kept as tidy as possible, and trailing cables and hoses are routed to minimise trip hazards.
Warning signs are used where appropriate to indicate wet floors or restricted access areas. We make every reasonable effort to prevent slips, trips, falls and accidental contact with machinery or chemicals during our work.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Health and safety training is provided to all new employees as part of their induction and refreshed as required. This covers safe systems of work, emergency procedures, equipment use, chemical handling and customer care. Additional training is provided when new equipment, products or procedures are introduced.
We encourage open communication about safety concerns and welcome suggestions for improving our procedures. Employees are consulted on changes that may affect their health and safety, and feedback from customers is used to refine our working methods.
Incident Reporting and Policy Review
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences are recorded and reviewed so that we can identify patterns and reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Where necessary, we will revise risk assessments, update procedures and provide additional training.
This health and safety policy is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains effective and appropriate for the nature and scale of our carpet and floor cleaning operations. The updated policy is communicated to all staff so that it is understood and consistently applied in daily work.
